Have you ever tried a Cactus Pear?
The Cactus Pear grows on the Prickly Pear Cactus in deserts throughout San Diego, Mexico and Arizona. It is also known as the "Cactus Apple" or "Tuna". You can eat the Cactus Pear (Tuna) in many different ways, fresh, make jelly or even candies with them.
In this lesson you are going to learn all about the food guide pyramid using the book "The Island of the Blue Dolphins".
The book is based on the true story of an Indian girl, Karana, stranded on an island for many years.
The Island of the Blue Dolphins is a real island
named San Nicholas Island. San Nicholas Island is just two hours
north of San Diego.
Karana called it The Island of the Blue Dolphins because it is shaped like a dolphin.

Karana learned to hunt, fish, and collect food to eat so she could survive.
If you were stranded on an island and could only bring one food with you, what would you take?
