Believe it or not, you eat the weight of six elephants during your lifetime. Male elephants usually weigh about 16,500 pounds, so let's figure out how much six of them weigh.

16,500 pounds x 6 = 99,000 pounds
Now, THAT is a lot of food to eat and digest in a lifetime!
Food enters your digestive system as soon as you take a bite!

Digestion has two important jobs in your body:
- Digestion breaks food into nutrients.
- Digestion takes these broken down nutrients and puts them in your blood, so they can be transported to your cells to be used as energy.
It can take hours or even days to turn the food you eat into nutrients and get those nutrients all the way to your body cells to be used as energy!

Today we are going to follow a piece of pizza from your first bite through your digestive system to the stomach.

Next lesson, we will follow the pizza from the stomach to where food goes out!
Where does digestion begin?
